Check out the video below to see how buying great skincare can help make a difference to climate change.
What is a carbon offset?
Each individual carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) removed permanently from the atmosphere. The offset is put into an environmental commodity registry which can then be purchased and permanently retired into the marketplace.
How do carbon offsets work?
Carbon offsets are created to help fight climate change: Money given to carbon offset platforms go directly to projects found to reduce Green House Gas emissions. These projects are all diligently reviewed, measured and third-party verified to ensure they really work.
What are examples of carbon offset projects?
Landfill gas capture projects and solar and wind power plants are great examples of powerful ideas fighting climate change.
1. Landfill gas capture projects
Did you know landfills contribute huge amounts of methane into the atmosphere?
Methane has the ability to enhance global warming by 25 times that of the same amount of carbon dioxide.
As your garbage ferments, breaks down and rots, it releases carbon dioxide and methane. With so many people on this planet, that’s a lot of rotting garbage! Which means that’s also a lot of methane and CO2 coming from rubbish dumps.
Thanks to clever initiatives like the MP Greenwood Landfill Gas to Energy Project, land fill gas (LFG) can be captured and converted into usable energy. In Greenwood, USA, the LFG is used to power the FujiFilm Manufacturing facility. It’s so powerful!
- LFG (Land Fill Gas) powers 40% of the huge facility, delivering 197 billion British thermal units of energy annually.
- This project reduces Green House Gas emissions by 0.023 million metric tons annually.
That’s the same as taking 15,800 passenger cars off the road for a year! That's a huge reduction in GGH!
2. Wind power projects
Harnessing the wind is one of the smartest ways we can generate power, and in places where manufacturing has increased such as Mexico, it’s a very important way to offset carbon emissions. It’s a renewal energy resource as it’s powered solely by the wind!
Carbon Check endorses the Oaxaca Wind Power Complex in Mexico as it’s an incredibly powerful way to offset carbon emissions. This power plant:
- Supplies enough electricity to power 700,000 homes
- Provides 670,000 metric tons of carbon emissions each year
How much is 670,000 tons? You’d have to drive your car 1.6 million miles to make that much carbon!
